In light of my previous post, here's something new that Google have released that isn't bad at all... (although probably part of their master plan to take over the Universe)
Google Checkout is a payment gateway service that can be implemented into almost any website or shop to allow payments for items and services.
Much like other payment providers like Worldpay, Paypal etc. but being Google you can probably expect it to be far more widespread.
To help their cause they have also made all transactions through Google Checkout completely free for the rest of the year.
They state, for the consumer it means they can make purchases for items using their Google Checkout account - therefore only needing to submit their credit card details to one place rather than have it sent to multiple.
Also, some of the shops currently using Google Checkout, like Ebuyer are giving £10 off purchases as an incentive.
Swwwweeet!

Maybe something to upsell to existing shop clients??

I'd heard this was on the way, now it looks like it's happening, however everything they do other than the search seems to underperform expectations forcing them to pay 100s of millions to someone who's done it right. If they could have bought PayPal I reckon they would have. Don't get me started about PayPal and their thieving ways, that's another story.....
I'd like to hear your views on Paypal - I use it almost weekly and find it extremely convenient... the ability to make instant payments even though the payment goes through my account as a direct debit, means I don't have to use my CC....
it's nice, i like
In fact ebuyer are giving £10 off EVERY £30 purchase (in vat ext shipping) so if you've got a few things to buy I suggest you head there and make multiple purchases
I used to use it all the time too until I sold an MP3 player then received a call from the buyer to ask if he could collect in person since he'd already paid me via PayPal. Being sceptical I tried to think how it could be a scam so emailed him from the official email as listed on the PayPal receipt to confirm the person on the phone was the same as the person who owned the official email address. Anyway he replied so I was happy, then he turned up and walked away with my mp3 player. I withdrew the money from my PayPal account bought an iPod and forgot about it. Then checked my PP account a month later to find it £173 (the amount I sold the mp3 player for)in the red. I called PP (not an easy task) who basically said that because the guy collected it in person it wasn't covered by their seller protection scheme. In order to actually be eligible for the seller protection scheme you have to jump through so many hoops and adhere to so many criteria that it's not practical. Basically this guy registered with a dodgy card and went shopping. When his victim finds out and calls his bank, the bank takes the money back from PP who take it back automatically from their users who got stung. When you consider how much technology PP have at their disposal I think it's entirely irresponsible that they allow users to sign up without more stringent checks. I got the police involved who were very helpful but they couldn't do anything because neither ebay or PP would talk to them which I think is actually a breach of financial standards authority rules. Imagine if a bank ignored the police! Then there's the charges which are EXTORTIONATE....I sold some Friends box sets which made ebay their listing fee, PP their fee to give me the money and then I had to pay another amount to transfer the money to a friend's PP account...if a bank did this there would be outrage. In the end that total transaction cost me 12% of the amount I got for the item. It's no wonder that they and ebay made over £100m profit that year! The story does end o.k though (for anyone who hasn't lost the will to live yet)...I did nothing every time PP emailed me, then they called, then they wrote, then they got a solicitor to write, then a debt collection agency wrote...then the debt collection agency turned up twice (both times I hid!) then they wrote a letter offering me a last chance to pay but a reduced amount of 75% which is when I knew they'd go away. There's so many anti PP websites out there with people with similar stories so I was lucky that I knew what to do but here's one guy who beat them at their own game. I now have a new PP account under a different name if I need to make a payment but I'll never use them to receive money again. Rant over!
Well I see you have a very specific reason not to like using paypal!! But like I said, I have hundreds of transactions through Paypal without a problem, sending and receiving money.
I have a similar story with Currys. I won't ever shop with them again. But I'm sure there are people who love shopping there! (-;
